Written for a specialized chamber orchestra, hand chimes, and choir, Virginia’s five movement suite captures various aspects of winter. She includes the howling winds in Winter’s Race, quiet contemplation over The Frost, child like wonder in Snowfall, and the racing danger and confusion of a Blizzard. The work ends with a Reprise that masterfully blends elements and melodic content from the first four movements.
Inspired by the view of the Milky-Way on a clear night, Virginia’s work for Full Orchestra is triumphant with soaring melodies and reflective moments as both the composer and listener contemplate the beauty of the stars.
The sea is full of beauty and danger. Those who can brave it have the opportunity to explore. Tempest portrays the dramatic cascading and crashing of an ocean storm. The odd meter in 9/8 and 12/8 provide the rocking and gliding of a ship fighting against the waves.
July Baby started as a lullaby Virginia wrote to help her brother’s new puppy fall asleep. She expanded upon it until it became a work for full orchestra. This playful piece includes the lullaby, an exploration theme, an adventure theme, and a section called “the Sock Thief,” which mimics the toddling steps of the puppy.
Racing along, this musical story seeks to dramatically portray a desperate race through the narrow paths of a serpentine canyon. The chase leads us through many twists and turns punctuated by staccato strings and booming percussion, while the brass leads us onwards.
